He paints the apostles as publicly exhibited and often despised, using Roman coliseum imagery and historical martyrdom to show that suffering and humility have been normal for the church. From the apostolic example he draws three lessons: God enables us with gifts, God exhibits us as a testimony, and God empties us so Christ can work through our weakness. He challenges us to stay in our lane, take up the cross daily, endure persecution as an act of worship, and deepen our faith so we will be found faithful when Christ returns.
